Western Justice was not first to this fight, but we have been tasked with forming a nationwide coalition to help right the many wrongs caused by the mismanagement of wolves. ​ Wolves are wreaking havoc across the nation, devastating ranches, decimating big game herds, and posing a dire threat to public safety. Every calf lost, every elk herd diminished, every pet killed, every ranch family pushed to the brink— it’s not “coexistence.” It’s malicious neglect.

Motion-activated field cameras, GPS collars, wolf scat analysis and cattle tail hair samples are helping University of California, Davis, researchers shed new light on how an expanding and protected gray wolf population is affecting cattle operations, leading to millions of dollars in losses.

While the expansion of gray and Mexican gray wolf populations is often hailed as a conservation success, the consequences for ranching families can be gruesome, costly and complex - threatening the safety of ranch families and their pets and livestock, as well as the long-term survival of multigenerational ranches and the rural economies they anchor.

Wisconsin’s wolf population has rebounded from extinction to an undeniable conservation success. But lately, it feels more like a horror story than a success story. When wolves prowl close to livestock, the victims are not faceless numbers in a report. They’re our farmers – real people left to face the bloody aftermath in their pastures while Washington bureaucrats sleep soundly miles away. Our farmers’ mental health, livelihoods and sense of safety are on the line.

The Sierra Valley, a picturesque 500-square-mile region straddling Sierra and Plumas counties, is facing a dire situation as wolves continue to attack livestock. According to Sierra County Sheriff Mike Fisher, there have been 72 confirmed and probable animal attacks this year, with wolves following cattle into the valley and preying on them, including calves. He says there are 20 to 30 additional livestock kills that are likely from wolves.
